Family Games

There are two games that I especially like to play with my family. There are probably more than two, but two come to mind right now-- Scrabble and PDQ.

I like Scrabble because there is plenty of time to talk, it's challenging, and involves words.

I like PDQ because it's fast, (You can play a game in about 5 minutes.), it's challenging, and involves words.

Does that sound like a contradiction? I like Scrabble because it's slow and PDQ because it's fast? Sometimes you need a fast game and sometimes you need a slow one. Right?

What games do you like to play with your family?

We play a variation of dominoes called "chicken foot". We have also had some very enjoyable evenings playing Trivial Pursuit and Pictionary. However, if we are going to do a family board game, Cranium is now the leading contender. I'm smiling just thinking about the good times we have had with these games. Thanks for the memory prompt.

With the age range in our family there are not too many games we can ALL play. A couple of them are "Topple" and "Kerplunk."

I enjoy playing "Boggle" especially with Big Brother because we're both good at word games.

DH and I like to play trivia games together.

Middle Sister enjoys "Yahtzee."

We've been playing Blokus recently. Good for age 5 and up. My husband and I have been playing after the kids go to bed.

We play a lot of family games: pinochle, Monopoly, Scrabble, Chairs (a stacking game), Yahtzee... One of our favorites is a variation of Pictionary that my husband invented -- he selects an outrageous category (notables have been "Wombats I Have Loved," and "Soap"), and then we all take turns drawing nonsense pictures on a huge pad. The game's sole purpose is to get us talking about anything and everything.

The Teds also love strategy games such as chess and 2-person games from Gigamic, a French company.

Family time is rare for us because of my husband's work and drill schedules, so it's very precious. Thankfully Ted the Younger isn't one of those sullen, incommunicative teens -- he loves family conversation!

Three of the kids and I spent most of the day recently working on a huge puzzle, playing Phase 10, and Sequence.

At a friend's New Year's Eve gathering, the kids were playing Cranium, and it looked so fun! I think we may have to invest in that one, too.

Youngest likes Clue, and the boys like Battleship. That's the good thing about board games -- the oldies are still goodies! Fun topic!

Scrabble, Apples to Apples, Cranium,
Euchre, Boggle, Monopoly (sometimes),
Life (sometimes) Rummy, Memory Games,
Clue (sometimes), Yatzee, Bunco, Spades,
Catholic Quiz Games for Religion. The sometimes means I have to dig up a mood to play them...guess I played them too many years! Ha! Fun. Suzanne SincerelyMyThoughts

I really enjoy the "Ungame". No one loses, everyone talks and you learn some great things about your family that you may not have known otherwise!

My Dh is very tactical - he excels at Risk. I am very trivial - I excel at Trivial Pursuit. We are evenly matched on Scrabble and Cribbage, so that's what we play most often. I also like Catch Phrase, Taboo, and Guesstures.

I don't think I've played PDQ

Wow, there are a lot of games out there I've never heard of.
Ruthann, I love "wombats I have loved" as a pictionary category. LOL I forgot we have enjoyed Cranium too and I love
Catch Phrase. My older kids will play Euchre which I also enjoy a lot. Is Euchre a game only played in the Midwest as I have heard?

Mimi, PDQ is an inexpensive game that requires you form a word from three letters on cards. First one to say a word in the right order gets the trick. It's simple but you have to think quickly. Thus the name PDQ (pretty darn quick). I love playing games with the family.

I had NEVER heard of Euchre until I moved to Bloomington, IN back in 1979.
THEN, everyone here spoke about it like it was some kind of Hoosier ONLY game!
LOL! Since then, I have heard of others from nearby states playing it...like you, soooo they are wrong.
It is pretty fun..I just learned about it after all these years. My kids learned about it through the Boy Scout Family Euchre tourney that they have each year...my DS is a Scout and my husband actually learned it years ago at work on lunch break, but never taught me. Still, we played during the Christmas break some. Suzanne

There are people in Michigan who think it's a Michigan game but I knew that wasn't true because I've seen it played in Ohio. Wonder where it started. What I like best about Euchre is that you don't have to pay TOO much attention to what you're doing-- leaves time for conversation. Still, there is some strategy...

Oooh, thanks, I shall look for it.

Mimi, if you like word games you'll like PDQ. It's amazing what words come to mind out of nowhere. I've also found it interesting that when I play with my 15 year old son he usually starts out winning by quite a bit. But after a few minutes of play I am often faster than he is. It's as though my brain needs to warm up. That's how it feels too.
